How to Kiteboard Safely in Gusty Conditions

This is a phase when a student does not really need an instructor and can elect to stop taking lessons for a while. Most of our students manage to get to this point in 2 … 5 sessions. Most kites will allow a skilled rider to push their 10 – 12m kiteboarding kites into the low 20mph wind range. As you progress in skills and look into owning smaller kitesurf kurser kites, you can begin to push the 25-30mph wind range. Using a smaller kite in high winds will move you much faster than larger kites in light winds. The windy season usually begins around October and continues all the way through May with big highs and low lows. A typical windy day is in the mph wind range which is perfect for kiteboarding.

Who teaches you is far more important than where you learn though it is good to know that there are hundreds of destinations around the world to safely learn kitesurfing at. Paying in advance is one of the easiest ways to commit. If there’s a will there’s a way they say and it’s true!

Your body will generally follow the head, so it will help keep you straighter stance. If you bring your head forward, your shoulders will follow and you could end up back over the board. Following on from the shoulders, you can see that it would be impossible to push them back if you didn’t straighten your arms. However, if you straighten you arms but don’t get your shoulders back, it will have a dramatic affect on the position of the bar and sweet spot .

Then you move on to an actual kitesurf kite which has the power to pull you and requires you to wear a harness around your waist to tie the lines on. You generally need no more than about half an hour to get become familiar with flying a small kite, learning to turn it around, giving it power and feeling the traction.

If we kite in an area unaffected by tides, then we can go about or kiting with the wind as sole concern. In a location that has great tidal differences, we need to know how tides affect us while kitesurfing so we stay safe and get the most time and enjoyment from the conditions. Your stance, or the position of your body while standing on the board, is essential to maintaining balance and control while kite surfing. Before attempting to stand up in the water, practice your stance by standing on your board and holding your kite on land. This will allow you to understand the limitations put on you by the board while maintaining control of the kite.

Of course we sit on the backs of two-thousand-pound animals and order them around; of course we strap ourselves to wakeboards and kites in fifteen-knot winds. A technical revolution can take root only if there’s a human infrastructure behind it.
